How to choose a tent: season, capacity, weight

The three trade-offs that decide which tent is right.

Short version: Size up on capacity, match the season rating to your conditions, and only pay the weight penalty you'll actually carry. A "2-person" tent fits two people and nothing else.

Capacity (buy up one)

Manufacturer capacities are tight — they assume shoulder-to-shoulder with no gear. For comfort, a couple should look at a 3-person tent; a solo backpacker often prefers a roomy 1–2P.

Season rating

Weight vs space

Car camping? Get the big, heavy, comfortable tent. Backpacking? Every gram is on your back — pay for a lighter tent and accept less room. Compare across stores; tent prices swing hard seasonally.
