EDP vs EDT: what the concentration actually means
Parfum, EDP, EDT, EDC — the labels decoded.
Short version: The letters describe how much fragrance oil is in the bottle. More oil = stronger and longer-lasting, usually pricier. EDP is the everyday sweet spot.
The ladder
- Parfum / Extrait — highest oil (~20–30%). Richest, longest, most expensive; apply sparingly.
- Eau de Parfum (EDP) — ~15–20%. Long-lasting and versatile; the default for most buyers.
- Eau de Toilette (EDT) — ~5–15%. Lighter, fresher, great for daytime and heat; reapply midday.
- Eau de Cologne (EDC) — ~2–5%. Brightest and briefest; a refresher, not a statement.
How to choose
Hot weather or office? EDT keeps it light. Evenings, cold months, or you want it to last? EDP or parfum. The same scent often comes in several concentrations — and an EDT of a fragrance you love beats an EDP of one you do not.
