How to choose a fragrance you'll actually wear

Notes, families and the one rule that saves you money.

Short version: Test on skin, not paper, and wait a few hours before judging — a fragrance changes as it dries down. Buy the one you still like at hour four, not the one that impressed at first spray.

The families

Fresh — citrus, aquatic, green. Clean and easy; great for daytime and heat.
Floral — rose, jasmine, neroli. Classic and wearable across seasons.
Woody — sandalwood, cedar, vetiver. Warm and grounded; strong in cold weather.
Oriental/amber — vanilla, spice, resin. Rich and bold; best for evenings.

The rule that saves money

A fragrance has three stages: the bright top notes (first minutes), the heart (the next hour or two), and the base (what lingers). Stores sell you on top notes; you live in the base. Test on skin, give it three to four hours, and judge the dry-down.
