How to prep for the interview
Consulting interviews are notorious for case interviews: a hypothetical business problem you have to structure, analyze, and recommend on in 30–40 minutes. Practice with Case in Point or RocketBlocks before the interview — going in cold rarely works.
Standard case archetypes: market sizing ("how many piano tuners in NYC?"), profitability ("our client's margins are dropping"), market entry ("should our client expand to country X?"), and M&A ("should our client buy company Y?"). For implementation roles (SAP, Salesforce, etc.), expect more questions on specific platform knowledge and past client engagements.
Where this role typically leads
Big-firm consulting (McKinsey/Bain/BCG): Analyst → Associate → Senior Associate / Engagement Manager → Principal → Partner, with up-or-out pressure at each level. Big firms typically expect 2-3 years per level and have explicit dates by which you need to be promoted or leave.
Most consultants exit to industry around the Senior Associate / EM level — Director or VP roles at portfolio companies, or to operating roles at PE-backed firms. The longer you stay in consulting past Principal, the harder the exit gets, but the higher the eventual partner-track upside. Implementation consultants (SAP, Salesforce) typically follow a different path: more vertical specialization, less travel, often better long-term lifestyle.
Red flags to watch for
- Heavy travel without compensation for travel time. "Up to 80% travel" should come with hourly billing or a travel premium — not flat salary.
- Implementation role with no platform certification path. Means you'll be doing client work without growing your own marketable skills. Walk away.
- "Bench time" billed as PTO. Real firms keep you on payroll between engagements; predatory ones charge your time off when there's no project.
- Up-or-out timeline not explicit. Firms that hide the promotion schedule do so to keep you on a slower track than you realize.
