Centella vs niacinamide: which calms skin better?

Two of K-beauty’s most popular soothing ingredients, side by side.

Short version: Centella calms redness and irritation (great for reactive, sensitized skin). Niacinamide calms oil and pores while evening tone. They are not rivals — many people use both.

Centella asiatica (cica)

A plant extract (you will see it as "Centella," "cica," or "madecassoside") prized for soothing inflammation and supporting the skin barrier. If your skin runs red, stings easily, or is recovering from over-exfoliation, Centella is the calmer of the two.

Niacinamide (vitamin B3)

A workhorse that regulates oil, visibly tightens the look of pores, strengthens the barrier, and fades post-blemish marks over time. Best for oily, congestion-prone, or uneven-toned skin. A 5% concentration is effective without irritation.

Which should you buy?

Neither is harsh, so both are good entry-level actives — introduce one at a time so you can judge results.
