What watch size actually fits your wrist
Case diameter, lug-to-lug and thickness — the three numbers that matter.
Short version: Case diameter gets all the attention, but lug-to-lug (the length tip to tip) is what decides whether a watch overhangs your wrist. Measure your wrist, then match.
The three numbers
- Diameter — the dial width. 36–40mm suits most wrists; 40–44mm reads larger and sportier.
- Lug-to-lug — tip to tip. This must not exceed your wrist width or the watch will hang off the edges.
- Thickness — a thick case slides under cuffs poorly; dress watches stay slim.
Match to your wrist
- Under ~16cm wrist: 36–39mm diameter, lug-to-lug under ~47mm.
- 16–18cm: 39–42mm is the sweet spot.
- Over ~18cm: 42–45mm wears proportionate.
Numbers are a starting point, not a rule — a thin dress watch wears smaller than a chunky diver of the same diameter. When in doubt, size down; oversized watches dated quickly.
