Skincare is not a salon visit, a once-a-month event, or a random dab of whatever is on the sink. It is a routine. A short, repeatable sequence you do without thinking. That boring consistency is the entire secret, and almost nobody wants to hear it.

People wildly overcomplicate this. Some think proper skincare means expensive parlour appointments. Others think it is slapping on cream whenever they remember. Both miss the point. Personal skincare is just a small daily procedure tuned to what your skin actually needs, and it is neither expensive nor difficult once you set it up. But it starts with one honest question you cannot skip.

Step zero: know your skin type

Before you buy anything, figure out whether your skin runs oily, dry, sensitive, normal, or some combination. This single fact decides which products suit you, and getting it wrong is why people buy things that "don't work." It is not the product, it is the mismatch. Expect to experiment with a couple of options before you lock in your lineup. The routine below is built for normal skin, and you adjust the dials from there. If you are unsure where you land, a simple skincare set for your skin type takes some of the guesswork out by bundling compatible products.

Step one: cleanse, gently

Cleansing is first, and it is mostly about not overdoing it. A cleanser uses oil, water, and surfactants to lift dirt and oil off your skin, then rinses it away. Use a soap-free cleanser, because soap is too harsh and strips your barrier. Use lukewarm water, never hot or cold, both of which stress the skin. And do not over-cleanse, because scrubbing your face raw all day damages it rather than cleaning it. Twice a day is plenty for most people. A reliable soap free cleanser is the foundation everything else sits on, so it is worth getting this one right.

Step two: exfoliate, on a schedule

Your skin constantly sheds dead cells and grows new ones. Exfoliation just helps that process along. This matters more than people realise, because dead cells sit on the surface and soak up your products before they can reach the living skin underneath. Skip exfoliation and you are partly wasting every serum and moisturiser that follows.

But more is not better. Roughly four to five times a week for oily or normal skin, one to two times a week for dry or sensitive skin, and a touch more in hot, humid weather when oil and grime build faster. Over-exfoliating wrecks your barrier, so respect the limit. A gentle facial exfoliant or a mild exfoliating scrub used on schedule keeps everything downstream working better.

Step three: moisturise, even if you're oily

Moisturiser is the workhorse, and yes, oily skin needs it too. A good moisturiser seals existing moisture into your skin cells and pulls moisture from the air when needed. The catch is amount. Too much clogs pores and causes the exact breakouts you were trying to avoid, so use enough and no more. You will dial in your personal amount within about a week of daily use. Apply it while your skin is still slightly damp, because that traps water against the surface instead of letting it evaporate. A balanced daily face moisturizer is the one product I would never tell anyone to skip.

Step four: sunscreen, every single day

Sunscreen is last and it is non-negotiable, sunny or cloudy. UV exposure is the leading cause of premature ageing, full stop. The easiest path is a daytime moisturiser with built-in UV protection, so you get two jobs from one product. If you prefer it separate, layer a lightweight broad spectrum sunscreen over your moisturiser. Either way, this step does more for how your skin ages than every anti-ageing serum combined, and it costs less.

That is the whole routine: cleanse, exfoliate, moisturise, protect, with the dials set to your skin type. Experiment with products and quantities until you find what gives you the best results, because the "right" routine is simply the one that works on your face and that you will actually repeat. If you have a genuine skin condition like persistent acne, see a dermatologist before loading up on products, because no routine substitutes for treating an actual disorder.

Five steps, a few minutes, twice a day. The people with great skin are rarely the ones with the most expensive shelf. They are the ones who do the boring thing every day without fail.
