What Actually Determines a Coin's Value (The 4 Real Factors)

"How much is this coin worth?" is every new collector's first question, and the honest first answer is unsatisfying: a coin is worth what someone will pay for it. But that number isn't random — it's driven by four factors, and once you know them, you can size up almost any coin yourself.

The biggest myth to kill right away: old does not mean valuable. Plenty of thousand-year-old coins sell for a few dollars because millions survive. Value is about scarcity and demand, not age. Here's what actually moves the price.

1. Grade (condition)

Condition is king. The same coin in pristine, "uncirculated" mint state can be worth many multiples of a worn, circulated example. Tiny differences in wear, luster, and surface marks translate to big differences in price — which is why learning to grade, or trusting a service that does, is the most valuable skill in the hobby. 2. Rarity

Rarity is the principal driver of value — and it has almost nothing to do with age.
