How to prep for the interview
Finance interviews lean technical for accounting roles (debits/credits, GAAP scenarios, period-close mechanics) and analytical for FP&A (forecasting, variance analysis, business partnering). Expect at least one Excel exercise — usually a model you have to build or correct under time pressure.
Common questions: "Walk me through the three financial statements and how they connect", "How would you approach a forecast for a new product line?", and "Tell me about a time you challenged a business leader's plan with data". For senior roles, expect questions on materiality, audit experience (if relevant), and SOX compliance — read the company's 10-K if they're public.

The biggest career fork: controllership / compliance track vs. business-partnership / strategy track. Both lead to CFO eventually but very different day-to-days. Senior controllers spend their time on audits, reporting, and risk; senior FP&A spends it in strategy meetings and modeling future scenarios. Pick the one whose 10am Tuesday sounds better.
Red flags to watch for
- "Wear many hats" at a company over 100 people. Means the accounting function is under-staffed and reactive. Expect overtime around close.
- No mention of audit experience or controls (for senior accounting roles). Either the company hasn't matured controls yet (risky) or the JD was written by someone who doesn't understand the role.
- "Build the financial function from scratch" with no team or budget for tools. Sounds exciting; usually a burnout pipeline.
- FP&A role where the CEO ignores forecasts. You'll do beautiful models that nobody reads. Ask in the interview how prior forecasts have influenced actual decisions.
