Frequently asked questions about currency exchange

How are exchange rates decided?

Major currencies “float” — their rates move constantly with supply and demand on global markets, driven by interest rates, inflation, trade and sentiment. The rate you see here is a mid-market reference rate; it's the midpoint banks quote each other, before anyone's markup.

Why is the rate my bank or card gives me different?

Banks, cards and exchange bureaus add a margin (and sometimes a fee) on top of the mid-market rate — that spread is how they make money. Expect the real rate you get to be a percent or few worse than the reference figure shown here, so treat this as a baseline.

What's the cheapest way to exchange money when travelling?

Generally: a no-foreign-fee card for purchases, and ATM withdrawals in the local currency (decline the machine's “convert for me” offer — that's dynamic currency conversion, which is almost always a worse rate). Airport exchange desks usually give the worst rates.

Are these exchange rates live?

They reflect recent market reference rates, refreshed regularly, which is plenty accurate for budgeting and shopping. For a live trade or wire of a large sum, confirm the exact rate with your provider at the moment of transfer.

What does “mid-market rate” mean?

It's the midpoint between the buy and sell prices for a currency pair on the open market — the fairest single number, with no margin baked in. It's what comparison tools quote so you can see how much markup a provider is adding.
