In the US, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is the normal range for sit-down table service, with 20%+ for service you're happy with. Norms vary by country — many places in Europe and Asia tip little or nothing because service is included, so check local custom when travelling.
Customarily you tip on the pre-tax subtotal, though plenty of people just tip on the total for simplicity — the difference is small. This calculator lets you enter whichever bill figure you prefer.
Delivery commonly runs 10–20% (or a $3–5 minimum on small orders), more in bad weather or for a long drive. Counter takeout you grab yourself usually warrants little or nothing, though a small tip is a kind gesture.
Add the tip to the bill, then divide by the number of people — which is exactly what the “split” field here does. For uneven shares, split the items first, then apply the same tip percentage to each person's portion.
In tipping-heavy countries like the US and Canada, servers are often paid below minimum wage on the assumption of tips, so skipping one for normal service is generally considered rude. Elsewhere it can be unnecessary or even discouraged — when in doubt, ask or check local norms.
