Frequently asked questions about unit conversion

How do I convert between metric and imperial?

Each pair has a fixed factor: 1 inch = 2.54 cm, 1 mile ≈ 1.609 km, 1 kg ≈ 2.205 lb, 1 litre ≈ 0.264 US gallons. This tool stores those factors so you just type a number and read the answer — no remembering conversions.

How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?

Multiply the Celsius figure by 9/5 and add 32 (so 20°C = 68°F); reverse it by subtracting 32 then multiplying by 5/9. Temperature is the one conversion that needs an offset, not just a factor, which is easy to slip on by hand.

How many grams are in a cup or ounce?

Weight units convert exactly (1 oz ≈ 28.35 g), but a “cup” is a volume, so grams per cup depend on the ingredient — a cup of flour and a cup of sugar weigh different amounts. For cooking, convert like-for-like (volume to volume, weight to weight) where you can.

Is the conversion exact?

For defined units (length, mass, volume) yes — the factors are exact or standard. Displayed results are rounded for readability, so for engineering or scientific work, keep more decimal places than the on-screen figure shows.

Why does the US gallon differ from the UK gallon?

They're simply different historical definitions: a US gallon is about 3.785 litres while an imperial (UK) gallon is about 4.546 litres. Always check which system a recipe or spec uses — this converter lets you pick the right one.
