Kitchen Gadgets I Actually Use Weekly (And the 8 I Wouldn't Buy Again)
After cleaning out my kitchen drawer, the math was brutal. Five tools earn their counter space. Eight don't. Here's the honest sorting.
I have eight years of accumulated kitchen gadget purchases — gifts, impulse buys, recipe-specific tools that promised to change my cooking. Most are now in a drawer I open once a year. The five I actually use weekly are different from the marketing-driven sorted lists most kitchen guides publish.
The five I actually use weekly
1. Microplane grater. Garlic, ginger, hard cheese, citrus zest — I reach for it at least four times a week. $15. The cheap version works as well as the premium.
2. Kitchen scale. $25. For anything baked or anywhere ratios matter, cups and tablespoons can't compete. The most-skipped tool by home cooks, and the one with the highest return on investment.
3. KitchenAid stand mixer. Bread, cookies, pizza dough, whipped cream. The kneading attachment alone justifies the counter space. Buy refurbished and save 30%.
4. A real chef's knife. $80–200 range, sharpened regularly. The bottleneck in 90% of home cooking is knife work, and the difference between a $20 knife and a $120 knife is real and immediate.
5. Le Creuset Dutch oven (or comparable enameled cast iron). Soups, stews, bread, braises. Heats evenly, retains heat, and lasts decades. The Lodge enameled Dutch oven at a third of the price is a legitimate alternative.
The eight collecting dust
Avocado slicer. A regular knife works fine and takes the same time. Garlic press. A Microplane is faster and produces better-textured garlic — and the press is harder to clean. Spiralizer. Used twice in two years. Bread machine. The KitchenAid plus a Dutch oven produces better bread with more control. Strawberry huller. A small paring knife is faster. Pancake batter dispenser. Pour from a measuring cup. Electric can opener. A manual one works fine, takes the same time, never breaks. Quesadilla maker. A regular skillet does this in 90 seconds without the storage footprint.
What earns counter space
Tools that work across five or more recipes, replace a 10-minute task with a 2-minute one, or produce results the basic alternative genuinely can't match. Single-purpose tools that fail that test should stay in the store. The money you save goes toward better ingredients — which is always the higher-return upgrade.
