Caught Near a Riot: The Calm-Brain Playbook
Most riot-survival advice on the internet is fantasy. Here's the actual playbook from a former crowd-control instructor — none of it involves a tactical vest.
Two truths most prepper content gets wrong: you are not the protagonist, and the goal isn't to fight your way out. The goal is to be home, safely, in 30 minutes, with no involvement. Here's how that actually works.
Before
Pay attention to local news on days when tension is forecast (court verdicts, election nights, protest weekends). If you live in a city, know two exits from your neighborhood that don't go through the central district. Have a Stanley tumbler of water and a charged phone before leaving the house — most evacuations fail at the practical level, not the strategic one.
During — if you're outside
Move away at walking pace, not running. Running attracts attention. Calm purposeful walking blends into the background. Head perpendicular to the direction of the crowd flow, not against it.
Drop visual markers. If you're wearing anything that identifies you as part of one side (a hat, a shirt, a sign), it's coming off. You want to be unmemorable in either direction.
Get indoors. A coffee shop, a hotel lobby, a pharmacy. Any place with employees. Buy something cheap so you have a reason to be there for the next 90 minutes. The vast majority of incidents resolve faster than that.
During — if you're in your car
Roll up windows, lock doors, keep moving at low speed if you can. If you're stopped, don't honk. Don't yell. Don't engage. The car is your insulation; staying inside it is the win condition. If approached, the standard advice is to drive slowly forward only if you're being actively attacked — and that decision has legal weight.
The gear that matters
A small flashlight (you'll wish you had one if streetlights go down). A small water bottle. A RFID wallet with cash inside — taxis sometimes only take cash in chaotic windows. A portable phone charger pre-charged. packing cubes in your car with a change of clothes if you live where this is plausible monthly.
The gear that doesn't
Pepper spray (legal issues, escalates situations, often confiscated). "Tactical" anything (marks you as a target). A camera (filming chaos in person is how people get hurt). Body armor (legal in most US states but practically useless for the actual statistical risks you face).
The thing no influencer tells you
Most "riot survival" content is fantasy entertainment for people who will never be in one. The actual probabilities, even in 2020 American cities, were that 99% of people in affected neighborhoods just stayed home for two days. Boring works. Don't be the protagonist.
