Gold Coast Suns
The Suns just beat the Western Bulldogs by two points. That's not a fluke — they've won three of their last five. It is, however, the sixteenth time in club history Gold Coast fans have been told "this is the year." Read this before you buy the membership.
What the form actually says
7-10 with a strong recent stretch is the most Suns thing imaginable. The team has done this exact arc — promising May, collapse in July — every season since they joined the league. The difference this year is the midfield. Lukosius is genuinely playing like an All-Australian and Touk Miller has stopped having quiet weeks. Lachie Weller in the forward line is the one bright spot you can bank on; 20 goals in 17 matches is real.
Don't let the Bulldogs upset fool you into thinking they're now a serious finals contender. Their away record is still bad and the fixture from here is rough. If they finish 11-12, that's the season.
Merch I'd actually buy
The Suns home guernsey is one of the better-looking ones in the league — orange and red works better than it has any right to. Official AFL store prices are AU$160. Pre-owned and last-season versions on eBay run AU$60-90 and the design barely changes year to year. Buy used.
A Suns cap is the more wearable option. Find it here. Don't bother with the scarf unless you're actually going to Metricon in winter — they sit in a drawer the rest of the year.
Watching the rest of the season
If you're not in Queensland, the only way to watch every Suns game is Kayo. AFL Live Pass is the cheaper option if you're flexible on the broadcaster. A Chromecast with Google TV is the easiest way to get Kayo onto a non-smart TV — about AU$100 and it just works.
For away game viewing parties, a soundbar with a wireless sub makes a Saturday afternoon broadcast feel like the actual stadium. The Bose or Sonos options are excellent but a $300 Sony beam does 90% of the job.
If you're going to a game
Metricon Stadium (Heritage Bank Stadium now, depending on what year your memory froze in) is a 25,000-seater. It rarely sells out except for the Lions game. Walk-up tickets day-of are usually fine. Bring sunscreen — the upper tier has no shade and a 3pm bounce in October will cook you.
The food in the ground is the usual AFL situation: $9 chips, $12 pies, $13 mid-strength beer. A 1L insulated drink bottle means you only have to queue once and you keep your water cold for the second half.
The forecast
Suns finish 9th or 10th, miss finals by a game, and the "rebuild" gets rebranded as a "consolidation year." It's still progress. Stop expecting more from this side until next year. Then expect everything.
