Persebaya vs Persik

Persebaya Surabaya versus Persik Kediri is an East Java derby with a hundred years of regional pride packed into 90 minutes. Persebaya are flying. Persik are wobbling. On paper that should make this easy. East Java derbies are never easy.

Form coming in

Persebaya have won four of their last five Liga 1 matches, including a 2-1 win over PSIS Semarang that the Bonek end at Gelora Bung Tomo will be talking about for weeks. The attack is humming — Beto Gonçalves and Ilija Spasojević have been the league's most consistent strike pair this season. The defense isn't pretty but it doesn't need to be when you're scoring twice a game.

Persik are the opposite — drew three of their last five, can't find a clean sheet, and the manager Herry Kiswanto is rotating the back four trying to find a combination that works. Their attacking output isn't bad on numbers but the midfield is leaking control late in matches.

If you support either side, the obligatory kit. Persebaya Surabaya jerseys on AliExpress are the cheapest reliable source outside Indonesia, and Persik Kediri shirts from the same. A pair of Nike Mercurial cleats or Adidas Predators if you're inspired to actually play.

The history

The two sides have met 10 times in recent history. Persebaya have five wins, Persik three, two draws. The most recent meeting ended 1-1 last season at Kediri — a match Persik should have won and didn't.

The Bonek (Persebaya's supporters) and the Persikmania bring noise that European leagues haven't seen in years. If you've never been to an Indonesian top-flight derby, it's a sensory overload — flares, drums, full-stadium choreographies. An Indonesia travel guide if you're putting together a trip; Liga 1 weekends across Java are genuinely worth structuring travel around.

Key matchup: Gonçalves versus Persik's back four

Beto Gonçalves is 41 years old and still scoring like he's 27. He works defenders by reading their first touch, drifts off the shoulder, and finishes with both feet. Persik's centre-backs have been losing positional duels all season — first man to the ball, then beaten on the bounce. If Persebaya get the ball into the channels and Gonçalves runs the gap, expect at least one goal.

Spasojević is the chess piece. He's not a goalscorer the way Gonçalves is, but he's the playmaker who finds the runners. If Persik double-team him in midfield, Persebaya's wide players have space. If they don't, Spasojević dictates the match.

The X-factor: tactical shapes

Persebaya's Robert Alberts runs an aggressive 4-3-3 with attacking full-backs. Possession-heavy, high press, looking to suffocate teams in their own half. The trade-off is being exposed on the counter when those full-backs get caught upfield.

Persik have been experimenting with a 3-5-2 to pack the midfield and contain. If they get the ball back and break quickly into the spaces Persebaya's full-backs leave, they can hurt. Whether Herry Kiswanto trusts that plan against a noisy away crowd is the question.

The pick

Persebaya 2-1. Gonçalves scores, Persik pull one back from a set piece, the Bonek end goes home happy. If Persik park the bus and counter, it's a draw. Either way, it's must-watch.

Streaming options outside Indonesia are spotty — Vidio is the official, but most fans use VPN-to-Indonesia. A VPN subscription gift card sorts that out if you can't catch it any other way.

East Java derby. Set the alarm. It's worth it.
