Pollen Count

Pollen counts are running high this spring. If you've been waking up with a face that feels stuffed with cement, this is why. The good news: most of what helps doesn't cost much, and most of what people spend money on doesn't help.

What the numbers actually mean

A pollen count is grains per cubic metre of air, measured at a specific location by a specific agency. Under 10 is low, 10-50 moderate, 50-200 high, over 200 is the kind of day when even people without allergies notice their eyes itching.

Different pollens matter at different times. Tree pollen — birch, oak, cedar — peaks March through May. Grass pollen takes over May through July. Ragweed kicks in late summer and runs into October. If you know which plant gets you, you know which weeks are going to be hell.

Check your local count daily during your trigger season. The Weather Channel app, Pollen.com, and AccuWeather all carry the numbers. If you're outside the US, your national meteorological service usually publishes them.

What actually works

Air purifier with a true HEPA filter. The single highest-impact buy. Levoit Core 300 is the bedroom workhorse at around $100. Coway AP-1512HH for a larger living room. Run it 24/7 during pollen season, change the filter on schedule. This is the difference-maker for sleep quality.

Keep windows closed during high-count hours (usually 5 a.m. to 10 a.m.). Use AC if you have it. A 10,000 BTU window AC if you don't and live somewhere it gets hot.

Shower at night, not in the morning. Pollen sticks to skin and hair through the day; you don't want to drag it onto the pillow. A allergen-barrier pillow cover and mattress encasement are roughly $40 combined and stop the pillow becoming a pollen reservoir.

Saline nasal rinse. Sounds gross. Works better than most prescription nasal sprays for clearing trapped pollen. A NeilMed sinus rinse kit is $15 and lasts months.

The medications worth knowing

Second-generation antihistamines — cetirizine (Zyrtec), loratadine (Claritin), fexofenadine (Allegra) — are the front line. Cheap, generic, daily. 365-count generic cetirizine for under $15 covers a year. Start a week before your usual peak, not the day symptoms hit.

For nasal symptoms, a steroid nasal spray like fluticasone (Flonase) works better than antihistamines if taken consistently. The mistake people make is using it for two days when symptoms flare. It needs daily use for two weeks to hit full effect.

If you've got asthma triggered by pollen, talk to your doctor before season hits. Inhaler doses sometimes need a seasonal bump. Don't tough it out — pollen-triggered asthma exacerbations land people in emergency rooms every spring.

What's a waste of money

Most "natural" allergy remedies. Local honey doesn't reliably help (the bees mostly collect from plants that aren't your trigger). Quercetin supplements have weak evidence. Air-quality apps that aren't tied to a real pollen station are guessing.

"HEPA-style" filters that aren't true HEPA-13 or HEPA-14. The marketing word matters. Check the filter spec.

$500+ air purifiers for a bedroom. The Levoit and Coway do 90 percent of what the high-end units do at a fifth the price.

If you're outside during peak

Wraparound sunglasses keep pollen off the eyes and out of the tear film. Cheap and underrated. A N95 mask on yard-work days does cut inhaled load substantially. You'll look like a COVID throwback. You'll also breathe.

Wipe the dog. Their fur is a pollen delivery system to your couch.

Peak pollen season is six to ten weeks per allergen. The right kit and the right meds turn it from unbearable to manageable. The wrong approach is just suffering, which a surprising number of people still do.
