Radio 1 Big Weekend

Radio 1's Big Weekend is the BBC's free-ticket festival that's gradually become not-quite-free and not-quite-small. It's still the best one-weekend music event in the UK calendar if you can get in. This year's lineup mixes Sam Fender headlining duties with the usual crop of just-broken artists Radio 1 is trying to push.

The history, kept short

Started in 2003 as a free weekend in a different UK city each year. Originally aimed at making BBC Radio 1 feel less London-centric. Has been hosted in Carlisle, Maidstone, Bangor, Glasgow, Hull, Coventry, Dundee — basically whichever city pitches hardest and has the parking.

Introduced a ticket fee in 2018. The "free" part became a ballot you mostly didn't win. The festival's economics shifted, the production scaled up, the lineups got bigger. Ellie Goulding played in 2009 before anyone knew the name. That's the pattern — Big Weekend has been a reliable indicator of who's about to break for fifteen years.

This year's lineup

Sam Fender headlines, which feels right — North East lad, anthem-builder, fits the festival's tone. KSI brings the rowdy element. Arlo Parks is the one to actually be at the front for; her live show has been getting sharper every tour. Yungblud is Yungblud. You either love it or you don't.

Lower down the bill is where the curiosity pays off — Big Weekend has always given mid-day slots to artists who'll headline within two years. Worth showing up early and exploring the smaller stages instead of camping the main stage all day.

If you want to dive into the headliners' catalogues before the festival, start with Sam Fender's Seventeen Going Under on vinyl and Arlo Parks' Collapsed in Sunbeams. Both essential.

What to actually bring

UK festival weather is whatever it wants to be. Pack for all four seasons.

A proper packable waterproof regardless of forecast. The forecast lies. Hunter wellies or sturdier festival boots — the field will turn to mud by Sunday whether it rains or not. High-SPF sunscreen for if it doesn't rain.

A 20,000mAh power bank matters more than any other piece of gear. Festival phone signal is patchy, your battery dies fast trying to find it. A collapsible water bottle for the free refill stations. High-fidelity earplugs if you're going to be near the main stage speakers for more than an hour — your future hearing will thank you.

If you're camping, a decent 2-person tent beats anything from a service-station pop-up shop, and an inflatable sleeping pad means you'll actually sleep instead of lying on solid ground.

The economics for the host town

Big Weekend brings significant money to whichever city wins the bid — accommodation rates triple, restaurants get rinsed, taxis can name their price. That's why councils want it. The trade-off is the locals' weekend gets eaten by 30,000 people in waterproofs. Most don't seem to mind.

The pre-festival watchlist

Stream the lineup before you go. Festivals reward homework — you'll enjoy a set ten times more if you already know two of the songs. Spotify Premium if you're not already paying for it. The Radio 1 site usually publishes a Big Weekend playlist a few weeks out.

Get to the smaller stages early. Hydrate. Wear the boots, not the trainers. And don't bring a flag. Nobody behind you wants to see your flag.

Festival's only as good as the homework you do for it.
