The exhaust note alone justifies the price difference if you're going to own this car for any real length of time.

The automatic transmission is competent and has better fuel economy numbers. The six-speed manual is more fun, though modern Mustang automatics have become much better with each generation. Mustang performance parts from brands like Ford Performance, Steeda, and Roush are widely available and specifically engineered for the platform, which means fitment and reliability are better than with generic parts. If you want to modify the car — suspension, exhaust, brake upgrades — there's a mature supply chain waiting for you.

What I'd Skip

The base model with the intention of modifying it up to GT performance levels. The parts add up faster than you think, the labor is real money if you're not doing it yourself, and you end up with a car that's less reliable and less predictable than a stock GT you bought in the first place. Budget honestly for the car you actually want; the "buy cheap and upgrade" math rarely works out the way it looks on paper. A good torque wrench set and basic tools are worth owning if you're going to do any Mustang work yourself, though — the community's DIY culture means there are walkthroughs for almost everything.

The bottom line: the Mustang's 60-year survival is earned. It delivers real performance value at an accessible price, with an aftermarket and owner community that make ownership easier than almost any other performance car. The V8 GT is the one to buy if you're going to buy one at all — and plan to keep it long enough that the ownership culture starts to matter to you.
