I spent a couple of years washing my face four times a day trying to get rid of the shine. The shine got worse. Turns out, my skin was producing more oil specifically because I kept stripping it. Oily skin has a logic to it — once you understand that logic, managing it becomes a lot more straightforward.

Sebum is not your enemy, excess sebum is

Your skin produces sebum for a reason — it protects the skin barrier, provides some antimicrobial defense, and keeps skin from drying out. The goal of an oily skin routine is not to eliminate oil production but to prevent it from outpacing what your skin needs. When you strip oil too aggressively, your skin often compensates by producing even more. That rebound effect is why people with oily skin who use harsh cleansers frequently report their skin getting shinier over time, not less. A proper oily skin cleanser removes surface oil without destroying the skin barrier. Salicylic acid is the most consistently useful active for oily skin — it is oil-soluble, which means it can get into pores and prevent the buildup that leads to breakouts. Cleansing twice a day — morning and night — is usually sufficient. More than that starts working against you.

The moisturizer question

A lot of people with oily skin skip moisturizer entirely on the theory that they already have enough. That logic sounds right but plays out badly. Dehydration (lack of water in the skin) and oiliness are not the same thing, and a dehydrated skin with overactive sebaceous glands is genuinely miserable to deal with. A lightweight, oil-free moisturizer with hyaluronic acid keeps the water content of skin balanced without adding to oil production. The same principle applies to sunscreen — an oil-free sunscreen or a mineral sunscreen formulated for oily skin protects without clogging pores or adding to midday shine.

What actually helps between washes

Blotting papers are underrated for managing shine throughout the day without disrupting your makeup or reapplying product. Clay masks — used once a week, not every day — absorb excess sebum from the surface and can help temporarily tighten the appearance of large pores. A pore minimizing toner with niacinamide used after cleansing can also help regulate sebum production over time. For severe oily skin that does not respond to routine changes, a dermatologist can prescribe topical retinoids or other treatments that target sebaceous gland activity more directly.

What I'd skip

Alcohol-heavy toners marketed for "shine control" — they work instantly but cause long-term irritation and eventually damage the skin barrier, which worsens oiliness over time. I would also skip clay masks used daily; used too often they dry the skin out, which triggers the same rebound oil response as over-cleansing. Bottom line: Oily skin is mostly a regulation problem, not a hygiene problem. A gentle facial cleanser with salicylic acid, a lightweight oil-free moisturizer, and consistent sunscreen use will get most oily skin under control.
