The internet's skincare advice ranges from genuinely useful to aggressively expensive to quietly absurd. I tried to strip back to just the things with solid reasoning behind them — the habits that would still be good practice if every product brand on earth disappeared tomorrow.

The foundational four that cover 80% of the work

Most skin health comes down to four consistent habits. First, cleansing with a product appropriate to your skin type — morning and night, using lukewarm water, with a gentle facial cleanser that does not strip the skin. Second, moisturizing every day, applied while the skin is still slightly damp. Third, wearing SPF sunscreen daily, not just on sunny days, because UV radiation is cumulative and clouds do not block UVA. Fourth, getting enough sleep — skin repairs itself during sleep, and sleep deprivation visibly accelerates lines and dullness. Anything else you add to a routine should sit on top of those four, not replace them.

The habits people skip that make the biggest difference

Knowing your skin type matters more than most people admit. Using products designed for oily skin on genuinely dry skin — or vice versa — negates the benefit of the product regardless of quality. Spending twenty minutes reading what your moisturizer is formulated for will save you months of wondering why it is not working. Drinking water does not directly hydrate skin in any simple linear way, but chronic dehydration does affect skin appearance. Treating it as a skin care tip is not wrong; it is just incomplete. The more accurate framing is that overall body health shows up on your skin — circulation, sleep, hydration, stress levels — because skin is an organ, not a surface.

What exercise and stress actually do

Exercise improves circulation, which directly supports skin cell regeneration and gives skin a healthier baseline color and tone. Chronic stress elevates cortisol, which degrades collagen and worsens inflammatory conditions like acne and eczema. These are not metaphorical connections — they are physiological. Managing stress through whatever method works for you has a measurable downstream effect on skin. Never use soap on your face. Bar soap is typically alkaline and disrupts the skin's slightly acidic pH, causing irritation even on non-sensitive skin types. Use a proper face wash formulated for facial skin.

What I'd skip

Exfoliation more than once or twice a week — it is one of the most common reasons people's skin becomes chronically reactive. The skin barrier needs time to recover between exfoliation sessions. Also skip the idea that more products automatically means better results. A three-step routine done consistently beats an eight-step routine done three times a week. Bottom line: Clean your face properly twice a day with a suitable facial cleanser, apply face moisturizer while skin is damp, wear sunscreen every morning, sleep adequately, and move your body.
