The protocol is simple and demanding

The master cleanse requires consuming only a specific lemonade mixture for ten days: fresh lemon juice, Grade B organic maple syrup, cayenne pepper, and water. You drink at least ten glasses per day. Each morning you do a salt water flush — two teaspoons of uniodized sea salt in a quart of warm water. Each evening you drink an herbal laxative tea. No solid food for the duration.

The caloric intake is roughly 600 to 1,200 calories per day depending on how much maple syrup you use. This is below what most adults need for normal function, which is why the protocol is time-limited to ten days and not designed as an ongoing eating pattern.

What physiologically happens

The digestive system substantially clears out — this is literal and the source of the "colon cleanse" framing. The salt water flush is a saline laxative that stimulates bowel movement. Combined with the evening herbal laxative and no solid food, the result is thorough gastrointestinal clearance. This is real and accounts for some of the reported lightness and clarity during the cleanse.

The liver and kidneys continue their normal detoxification functions without any help from the protocol. These organs don't need external support for detoxification in healthy people. The "toxin flushing" language in the protocol's marketing is not biologically accurate in the way it's usually framed.

Weight loss is real but largely temporary

Most people lose 8 to 15 pounds during the ten days. Most of this is water and glycogen — stored carbohydrates that the body depletes in the first day or two. A smaller portion is actual fat. When normal eating resumes, water and glycogen stores refill rapidly and the scale climbs back, typically recovering 5 to 10 of the lost pounds within a week.

This isn't a reason not to do it — understanding what the weight represents prevents the discouragement of watching the number climb post-cleanse and misinterpreting it as failure.

The psychological component is interesting

People who complete the master cleanse consistently report a changed relationship with food during and after the protocol. Going ten days without solid food produces a kind of detachment from habitual eating patterns — the automatic snacking, the boredom eating, the compulsive food behaviors. Completing something difficult also tends to create momentum for other behavioral changes. Whether this psychological shift justifies the physical effort depends on the individual.

What I'd skip

I'd skip this protocol if you have diabetes, kidney disease, cardiac conditions, or a history of eating disorders. I'd skip doing it without understanding that significant portion of the weight will return. And I'd skip treating it as a weight management strategy — it's a short intense reset, not a sustainable approach to body composition.

For a healthy adult with realistic expectations, a ten-day cleanse can produce a genuine physical and psychological reset. The most important thing is what you do differently with eating and activity afterward — that determines whether the experience produces lasting change or just a temporary number on a scale.
