When a supplement is marketed as producing dramatic results without exercise or diet change, that's the same pitch ephedra products used. The question to ask is: what's the mechanism, what's the evidence, and what are the known risks? Anything working by stimulating your sympathetic nervous system deserves particular caution if you have any cardiovascular history. Any "proprietary blend" that doesn't disclose individual ingredient quantities is hiding something.

A omega-3 supplement with well-documented effects on inflammation, or a basic vitamin D supplement if you're deficient, are the kinds of supplements with decades of research behind them. Weight loss pills with novel plant extracts, enzyme blockers, or stimulant complexes are a different category entirely.

What I'd skip

I'd skip any supplement promising to significantly accelerate weight loss that I can't find independent research on. I'd also skip the assumption that "natural" or "herbal" means safe — ephedra is about as natural as it gets and it caused heart attacks. The safety of any compound depends on its mechanism and dose, not its origin.
