The absolute line: never click your own ads

The content policies cover obvious categories — illegal content, certain adult material, content promoting violence — but publishers sometimes get tripped up by edge cases. A reasonable amount of mature language on a blog is generally acceptable; excessive profanity throughout a site is not. If you're genuinely uncertain whether a particular piece of content might be a problem, the safer move is to not register that page or site for AdSense. Pop-up ads that appear without being requested by the user are also a violation. This tends to catch people who've added third-party widgets or ad networks to their site without realizing those scripts generate their own pop-ups.

Don't modify the ad code

AdSense gives you a snippet of HTML to paste into your pages. That snippet should go in as-is. It's tempting for people with some coding experience to "improve" it or add their own parameters. Don't. Modifying the AdSense code is a policy violation. If you want customization, use the official options available inside the AdSense dashboard — ad sizes, colors, and formats can all be adjusted there legitimately.

What I'd skip

I'd skip the mindset of trying to game any of this. The program isn't a puzzle to crack — it's a straightforward revenue share. The publishers who earn reliably from AdSense are the ones producing content that people genuinely search for, placing ads in positions that make contextual sense, and leaving the system to do its job. Shortcuts tend to generate suspicious click patterns or policy flags, and the downside is losing an account that took real effort to build. Read the terms once when you sign up. Update yourself once a year as policies evolve. That's all the compliance overhead this requires. **Bottom line:** Never click your own ads, never solicit clicks from others, keep your content within policy limits, and don't touch the ad code. These aren't arbitrary restrictions — they protect the advertiser relationship that makes the whole revenue model work.
