I built three of my first four niche sites without a paid keyword tool. The method was slower and required more manual judgment, but the keyword data I collected was real — the same underlying signals that paid tools compile, accessed through free surfaces. If you are starting out and every dollar matters, you do not need a $99/month subscription to do keyword research. You need a systematic process and some patience.

Start with what the search engines show you for free

Search autocomplete is the most underused free keyword research tool available. Type your niche keyword into Google and stop before pressing Enter. The dropdown suggestions are drawn from actual search volume — they show what people with that keyword in mind searched for most often. Screenshot those suggestions. Then add each letter of the alphabet after your keyword and capture the new suggestions. This process takes 20 minutes and produces a substantial keyword list drawn from real search behaviour. "People Also Ask" boxes and "Related Searches" at the bottom of results pages give you the adjacent questions and terms that active searchers connect to your topic. These are particularly useful for finding article angles you wouldn't have thought of from keyword data alone.

Google Search Console is free and shows you real data

Once your site has published a few articles and been indexed, Google Search Console shows you exactly which queries are triggering impressions and clicks on your pages. This is not a substitute for pre-publication research, but it is a free ongoing keyword intelligence source that tells you what your audience actually searched for to find you — often revealing angles you didn't plan to target. New opportunities emerge from this data regularly on active sites.

Free tools with real utility

Ubersuggest offers a limited number of free searches per day with actual volume and difficulty estimates. Google Keyword Planner is free with any Google account and was designed for paid advertisers but provides search volume ranges that are useful for planning. AnswerThePublic generates a visual map of questions people ask about any topic — useful for content angle ideas. These tools together cover most of what a beginner needs without the subscription. The limitation relative to paid tools is primarily the competition analysis depth. Free tools tell you search volume with some accuracy; they give you less detail on who you're competing with for that keyword. For the first six months of building a site, that trade-off is acceptable. A keyword research tool subscription becomes valuable once your site is earning enough that more precise competitive data changes specific decisions.

The time trade-off is real

Free keyword research takes two to three times as long as the same process through a comprehensive paid tool. A paid tool aggregates competitive data, suggests related terms, estimates traffic potential, and tracks your rankings — all in one interface. Free tools require you to manually compile data from multiple sources, make your own difficulty estimates by analysing search results page by page, and track rankings in a spreadsheet. If your time has a meaningful hourly value, the math shifts toward paid tools relatively quickly. A $30/month tool that saves four hours per month is worth it at any hourly rate above $7.50. The calculation is personal but worth making honestly.

What I'd skip

Skip any tool or service that claims to produce a high-volume low-competition keyword list instantly, especially if it requires payment. Genuine low-competition, high-volume keywords are rare and require manual verification. Services selling them in bulk are usually selling outdated data, estimated data, or data from different search markets than yours.

Bottom line

Autocomplete, Search Console, and free tool trials are enough to build a workable keyword list when you are starting out. Use the money you save on content production. When the site is earning, evaluate whether a paid SEO software subscription changes your research speed enough to justify the cost — and by then you will have the data to answer that question from real experience. 🛒 Ready to shop?
