When you mix business expenses with personal spending, you lose two things: an accurate picture of your actual margins, and deductions you're entitled to. The fix is genuinely simple — open a separate bank account and a separate credit card for business use only. Every business purchase goes through those. Personal spending never does. This takes about 45 minutes to set up and saves enormous cleanup effort later.

Pair that with an expense tracking notebook or simple accounting software and you'll have clean books at tax time instead of a month of painful reconciliation.

Undercharging — and the specific reason it happens

Charging too little isn't random. It usually comes from anxiety about rejection: if you charge less, clients are more likely to say yes, and early clients are emotionally valuable when you're starting out. But underpricing trains both you and your clients for the wrong thing. You train yourself to work at a pace that isn't sustainable, and you train clients to expect a rate that doesn't reflect your real value. Correcting it later is genuinely hard because you're essentially firing your first clients to take better-paying ones.

The better move is to research comparable rates before you set yours, build a simple cost analysis (time + overhead + reasonable profit), and price at the result even if it feels high. You can always negotiate down. It's much harder to negotiate up after the relationship is established.

Treating the website as an afterthought

Not every home business needs a website on day one. But when you do need one, having a site that looks poorly maintained signals to potential clients that your business is poorly maintained. Free hosting platforms that plaster ads across your pages undercut your credibility immediately. A basic registered domain and a clean, professional site don't cost much — under $100 per year for most setups. The optics of having no website or an obviously free one are worth examining honestly against that cost.

You also need to know roughly where your customers are and how they'll find you. That's not a technical exercise — it's a question of whether you're showing up where the people who need you are actually looking.

The idea that fixing your mindset will fix your business. The practical mistakes — weak financial records, underpricing, an inadequate online presence — have practical fixes. Mindset isn't why home businesses fail; specific, correctable structural problems are. Identify those first.
