What I'd Skip

I'd skip holding out for the "perfect" first job. The specific place you start matters much less than whether you take it seriously. Someone who bags groceries reliably and well for a year builds a better professional reference and a better personal work ethic than someone who spent that year waiting for a position that never materialized.

I'd also skip the embarrassment of being turned down. Every rejection from a first job application is normal and most of them have nothing to do with you — the business was fully staffed, they needed availability you don't have, they already had someone in mind.
