SEO Basics That Actually Move Your Rankings

SEO Basics That Actually Move Your Rankings

SEO gets talked about like it requires a specialist and a six-month retainer. Some of it does. But the foundational moves — the ones that account for the majority of ranking improvement — can be done by anyone who understands what search engines are actually trying to do. They're trying to show people the most useful, relevant result. Write useful, relevant pages and structure them correctly. That's most of it.

Start with keyword research before you write anything

SEO tools like Google's free keyword planner and a handful of paid options show you exactly what phrases people are typing into search engines. Before writing a product page or blog post, I spend ten minutes finding the phrase with real search volume that my content should target. This isn't about stuffing keywords into text — it's about understanding how your potential customers describe their own problem. When your page uses the same language they use in search, the match is genuine, and search engines reward that.

Get keywords into the places that carry the most weight

The title tag, the H1 heading, and the first 100 words of the page are where search engines look first. If your target keyword appears naturally in all three places, you've done the foundational work. H2 subheadings are also useful for secondary keywords and for making long pages scannable. What you want to avoid is either ignoring keywords entirely or packing them in unnaturally — "best running shoes for running enthusiasts who run" doesn't help anyone. Natural language with intentional keyword placement is the goal.

Meta descriptions are your ad copy

The meta description doesn't directly affect rankings, but it determines whether someone clicks your result when it appears. It's the two-sentence preview that shows on the search results page. Write it like a pitch — what will the reader get from clicking? Include the target keyword naturally, keep it under 160 characters, and make it accurate. A misleading meta description that gets clicks but disappoints visitors hurts your rankings indirectly through bounce rate.

What I'd skip

I'd skip any SEO service that promises guaranteed rankings or "1,000 backlinks for $50." Those links come from low-quality sources that search engines either ignore or penalize. The only backlinks worth having are from real publications that linked to your content because it was useful. Build those by creating something genuinely worth linking to, then reaching out to people who cover related topics.

The bottom line

Basic SEO isn't a black art. It's structured, honest communication with search engines about what your pages are about. A decent keyword research tool, clean HTML with proper heading hierarchy, accurate meta descriptions, and content that actually answers search intent — those four things outperform most "optimization" campaigns I've seen. Your website analytics platform will show you which pages are getting organic traffic and which aren't. Start with the pages that are almost ranking — often a few targeted edits will push them over the threshold. That's faster than building new pages from scratch. 🛒 Ready to shop?
