You've got about 30 seconds from the moment someone lands on your page to convince them they're in the right place. That's not a figure I made up — it matches everything I've seen from analytics on my own sites. Most of the things that kill that first impression are completely fixable, and none of them require a redesign.

Slow loads and broken links destroy credibility instantly

A page that takes four seconds to load loses a big chunk of its audience before a single word is read. And a broken link — especially in the main navigation — signals neglect in a way that's hard to recover from. I run a crawl with a simple website analytics platform every couple of weeks just to catch dead links before a real visitor does. When someone follows a broken link they don't assume it was a one-time glitch; they assume the business behind it isn't paying attention. Fix load speed first (compress images, cut unnecessary scripts), then do the link audit. In that order.

Forcing registration at the wrong moment

Checkout is not the moment to ask someone to create an account. They've already decided to buy — your job now is to get out of the way and take their money. Any interruption to that flow is a leak. If you need the data that registration provides, ask before checkout starts, or offer it as an optional step on the confirmation page. A well-configured website builder with a modern checkout plugin handles this correctly by default; older setups often don't. Check yours by walking through the purchase as if you were a first-time visitor.

No visible brand identity from page to page

Your logo should be on every page. Not tucked away, not styled differently on interior pages — consistently placed at the top. It sounds obvious, but it's easy to create category pages or blog posts that go live without the standard header template. Every page without your logo is a page where a visitor could lose the thread of who you are. Brand recognition accumulates slowly from repeated exposure; any page that breaks the sequence wastes that investment.

What I'd skip

I'd skip any pop-up that fires within three seconds of a page load. Visitors haven't read anything yet. They haven't seen any value. Asking them to subscribe before they've decided they care about you is the digital equivalent of a salesperson blocking the shop door. Exit-intent triggers, or prompts that fire after someone has scrolled through 60% of the page, convert far better and don't make you look desperate.

The bottom line

A fast site, clean navigation, and consistent branding won't make your ecommerce platform viral. But they remove the friction that's currently stopping conversions from people who were already interested. That's recoverable revenue, and most of it costs nothing to fix except attention. Start with a speed test, run a broken-link scan, and walk the checkout flow yourself. Do those three things this week and you'll have already outperformed a lot of competitors who are spending money on ads but sending people to a leaky funnel. 🛒 Ready to shop?
