The Food: More Than Finger Food

The seafood spread at a typical evening session is substantial. Mounds of shrimp, multiple oyster varieties, fish preparations, and a rotation of cooked dishes from local restaurants. This is actual food, not canape portions. Come on an empty stomach. For Newport-specific ingredients, the California spiny lobster appears when the season is right, and a few harbor restaurants send representatives with items you can only get at the event. Pack a pair of portable utensils—the compostable forks at large events are always underwhelming—and keep wine accessories handy if you're the type who brought your own glass rather than using the festival pour.

California Wineries and the Cognac Seminar

The wine presence is genuinely strong. Boutique Central Coast producers show up alongside the better-known Napa names, and the pouring staff are usually the actual winemakers or their close associates, not distributor reps. Conversations are easy to start and informative if you have any real interest in production methods. The cognac and cigar seminar is a standalone session that sounds more niche than it is. It runs as an intimate group, the instruction is substantive, and the atmosphere is deliberately unhurried—more private club than public event. Whether you smoke or not, the cognac education component is worth attending on its own.

Planning the Weekend

The festival occupies a long weekend in early May, which is also when Newport Beach is at its most pleasant: warm without summer-level crowds, the ocean still a bit green from winter, the restaurant scene fully engaged. A travel-sized reusable bag for carrying bottles home from the on-site wine sales is a practical addition most people forget. If you're staying in Newport Beach for the festival, book well ahead. The boutique hotels on the peninsula go first.

What I'd Skip

The midday sessions tend to be more sparsely attended but also have fewer active pour stations open simultaneously. The evening sessions are the fuller experience. Also: don't bother with the shuttle—the harbor is walkable from most peninsula accommodations and the walk back after the event is genuinely pleasant.
