Pacific Beach is where San Diego performs itself. The golden sand, the boardwalk, the surf competitions, the taco stands, the bars that open at noon — it's all here, and it's all operating at full volume every weekend from May through September. It has 26 million visitors a year for the same reason it gets overlooked by visitors who come looking for something more exclusive: it is genuinely, unambiguously fun, and it doesn't pretend to be anything else.

The Ocean Front Walk Boardwalk

The Ocean Front Walk runs along the beach from Mission Beach north through Pacific Beach, passing restaurants, surf shops, bike rental stands, and a continuous parade of people who look like they live outdoors. This is the place to rent a [[beach cruiser bike]] and ride it slowly while watching the ocean. Most rental shops are clustered near the Crystal Pier and south toward Belmont Park. Ride north for quieter sections; south takes you into Mission Beach's denser boardwalk energy. Early morning before 9am the path belongs mostly to serious cyclists and joggers — that's the window for a peaceful ride before the crowds build.

Crystal Pier: Historic and Underrated

The Crystal Pier is a 1927 structure that extends into the Pacific with a cluster of blue-shuttered cottages actually built on the pier itself — you can rent them overnight, which is one of the more unusual accommodation options in San Diego. Even if you're not staying there, walking the pier at golden hour gives you a view back at the Pacific Beach coastline that no Instagram filter can improve. It's quieter than it should be given how photogenic it is. Bring a [[camera bag]] and plan for the thirty minutes before sunset.

Surf, Sand, and the Summer Scene

Pacific Beach draws serious surf competitions in the summer, and even in the absence of organized events the water is consistently active with surfers at the break. The beach itself runs from gentle south-facing sections good for swimming to the more exposed northern stretches where the waves build. [[Surfboard]] rentals and lessons are widely available from the shops along Garnet Avenue and Mission Boulevard. If you're bodysurfing or boogie boarding rather than stand-up surfing, the mid-beach sections between the lifeguard towers are the best bet. Pack [[reef-safe sunscreen]] and a [[dry bag]] for your valuables — the summer beach scene here means towels, coolers, and beach chairs as far as you can see, and you don't want your phone in a pile.

Dining and Nightlife

Pacific Beach has one of San Diego's denser restaurant streets on Garnet Avenue, running from the beach inland for about a mile. The range is genuine — Thai fusion, Mexican, ramen, pizza, seafood — and the quality is generally higher than the casual surroundings suggest. The bar scene starts early in the afternoon and the density of options within walking distance of the beach hotels means you rarely need to drive. The best policy is to arrive with no reservation and walk Garnet until something looks right.

What I'd Skip

The southern end of Pacific Beach where it bleeds into Mission Beach can get genuinely overcrowded on holiday weekends. If you're looking for space, walk five minutes north of the Crystal Pier and the density drops noticeably. The shopping district boutiques are fun to browse but heavily weighted toward surf brands and beach souvenirs — don't plan serious shopping here. **Bottom line:** Pacific Beach is an unapologetic summer beach town and one of California's best. Rent a bike, eat a fish taco, watch a surf competition, walk the Crystal Pier at sunset. Bring [[beach chairs]], a [[portable cooler]] if you're spending the day, and [[sunscreen SPF 50]] because the UV bouncing off the sand at PB is relentless. Arrive by 8am for free parking or plan to pay and walk. 🛒 Ready to shop? Compare Outdoors & Recreation across stores →
