The pandas are the well-known draw but they're not the most interesting thing here. The morning window before 11am, before most visitors arrive and while the animals are most active, is when you should be at the zoo.
The Pandas: Morning Window Only
Giant pandas at the San Diego Zoo are most active in the first two to three hours after the zoo opens at 9am. By early afternoon, they're typically in their enclosure shelters. This is not a San Diego-specific quirk — pandas worldwide operate on a morning-active schedule linked to their bamboo feeding patterns.
