Keeping Siblings Together After Divorce: The Case For and Against

When my cousin's divorce was finalized, the question that everyone — family, the mediator, both attorneys — assumed was settled turned out to be genuinely complicated. Her older son was sixteen and wanted to live with his father. Her younger daughter was nine and wanted to stay with her mother. The simple answer was "keep them together." The real answer took six months to work out, and the decision they finally made wasn't the simple one.

Why siblings together is usually right

The default — keeping siblings in the same household, moving together with the custody schedule — is the default for good reasons. Siblings in a divorced family share a unique experience that only they have: they know both parents, they understand the specific texture of life in both households, they're going through the same thing at the same time. That shared experience is a source of support that's qualitatively different from what a parent or peer can offer.

Research on sibling relationships in divorcing families consistently finds that children who remain with their siblings cope better with the transition than those who are separated. They have someone to process with. Someone to be a known quantity in an environment that's become unfamiliar. Even siblings who fight constantly often provide each other emotional grounding that they couldn't articulate if you asked them to.

Practically, it's also simpler. One set of schedules for pickups and handoffs, one logistics conversation with your ex about where the kids are when, one adjustment at school rather than multiple. When the practical complexity of splitting siblings is added to everything else you're managing, the default simplicity of keeping them together is worth something.

When splitting genuinely makes sense

There are real situations where splitting siblings is the right answer. A teenager with one more year of high school who would have to change schools and leave their social world isn't well-served by being kept together for the sake of symmetry. A child with a specific medical condition that's managed by one parent's proximity to the right care facilities has different needs than their sibling. Educational placement in a specific program that only exists in one parent's city.

The older-child preference question is a real one. Family courts in many jurisdictions take the preferences of older adolescents seriously, and a sixteen-year-old who strongly prefers to live with one parent deserves to have that preference heard and genuinely weighed — not overridden because it results in a split arrangement that's administratively cleaner for the adults.

When siblings are split: keeping the bond alive

If siblings end up in different primary households, the relationship needs deliberate protection. Phone calls, video calls, times when they're both at the same parent's house for extended periods — these need to be planned rather than assumed. Sibling relationships that drift during a divorce can recover, but they require intention from the adults in both households.

A shared hobby, game, or creative project that spans both households — something they do together on video calls or mail back and forth — gives the relationship a structure. A kids craft kit they both work on from opposite houses sounds small and is actually meaningful to children. The connection isn't just passive; it's active and reciprocal.

What I'd skip

I'd skip splitting siblings as a way to resolve a parenting dispute between adults. The situation where each parent takes one child because they can't agree on anything else is a real pattern and it's genuinely harmful. It treats children as an equitable division of marital assets rather than as people with relationships worth protecting. Courts don't favor it and neither should parents.

I'd also skip assuming that keeping siblings together requires identical custody arrangements for all children. The sixteen-year-old and the nine-year-old can have different custody schedules — one with more flexibility, one with more structure — while still spending the majority of their time in the same household. The arrangements can be tailored to the individual children without requiring a split.

The honest bottom line: keep siblings together unless there's a specific, child-focused reason not to. The relationship between them is one of the most durable things that survives a divorce, and it's worth protecting deliberately — because nobody else will protect it if you don't.
